Afternoon in Aswan

I was happy to get the invitation to this year’s World Press Photo Awards’ opening reception at the UN and was really looking forward to seeing the winning images in print. So, last night, when I finally made it to the exhibition, I couldn’t help but think about how the actual experience might have been for each of the photographers while they were in the process of making the iconic images.

I am no war photographer but sometimes I find myself in dicey situations, like when I was in Egypt a couple of years ago. It was a full-on protest rally in Aswan and I was right in the middle of it! (It’s a long story how I got there in the first place). My heart was racing and I didn’t know what would happen next. But out of the corner of my eye, I noticed this family and I couldn’t help but point my camera upwards.
